PROPOSAL

You want to make the next step in your career or you want to completely transform your career?

Whatever your situation is - it will definitely help you if you follow your purpose. Yet if you have not found it then start looking for it now.

Living on purpose feels alive, clear, and authentic. You may also experience “flow,” which is a state of total absorption in which time seems to disappear and you feel content and fulfilled.

But how to find your purpose? To becoming closer to your purpose you will do more of the things you really enjoy and automate or outsource the things you hate to do.

Let's get to work.

But how to find your purpose? To becoming closer to your purpose you will do more of the things you really enjoy and automate or outsource the things you hate to do.

Let's get to work.

PURPOSE

Maybe you want to make the next step in your career or you want to completely change your career. Whater your situation is it definately helps if you are following your purpose. If you have not found it yet then start looking for it now.

Living on purpose feels alive, clear, and authentic. You may also experience “flow,” which is a state of total absorption in which time seems to disappear and you feel content and fulfilled.

There have been studies that showed that people who are following their purpose and not just follow for example money are significantly more successful. What are other benefits if you live more ‘on purpose’ ? Well, for eample better relationships, better mental and physical health, more resilience.

Well, that’s all great, but how do I found my purpose?

To becoming closer to your purpose you will do more of the things you really enjoy and automate or outsource the things you hate to do.

Exercice 1 : Strengthen your strengths

Write down a list of all your strength. To make it easier for you you can ask yourself the following questions :

In which areas do I feel fulfilled?

What do people love about me ?

In which areas do people ask me for advice?

In which areas am I better than others?

Which tasks do I do with ease?

What is totally normal for me ?

Which skills do I need to have so that my target group finds me attractive?

Which skills do I already have that need further development and only few people have?

Which combination of areas woud make me especially valuable (f.ex. IT Business Analyst, Digital Marketing, Online Marketing, Legal/Compliance/Leadership) ?

STRATEGY

Where am I now?

What is my current position?

Positioning

It is essential to have a clear positioning when you hunt for a position. Let’s say you are looking for a ‘digital marketing’ position. Then you should not also look for three differnet positions (IT Business Analyst, Developer, Product Owner) because you will not come across as somebody with the specialised knowledge who brings value. Of course you need to have a certain flexibility when in comes to the job hunt, maybe the market is not looking for certain types of roles, then you open up the search to a wider range. Focus is power here. So for example a good positioning would be ‘I am a digital marketing expert in the fashion industry’, or ‘I am a M&A Analyst in the industrial production area’. Your positioning describes firstly your offering, secondly for whom are you relevant, and finally why should they hire you.

Advantages of a good positioning

  1. Easier access into a market ; show the uniqueness of your service and adapt it to the needs of your target group

  2. Makes you and your service unique (Unique Selling Point) ; with a very clear positioning you will seperate yourself from the masses and mainstream

  3. A strong positioning makes your problem solving valuable; through a well positioned uniqueness you can target your targets groups needs better

  4. A strong positioning saves your target group time and money. Your target group knows immediately what to expect from you.

  5. With a strong positioning you will be remembered by your target group. Also you will have trust advantage.

Why should my target group decide to give me the job?

Positioning through specialisation

With so many different positions out there even in the same field such as for example IT or Banking it is crucial to specialise differentiate yourself. You can specialise in following areas:

1. Specialisation in knowledge (f. ex. Digital Marketing)

What is your special USP, and why does this make you irresistable?

What is your target group receiving from you, only from you and from nobody else?

Why is your offering different and more attractive than that of the ten other candidates?

2. Specialisation in decision makers (f. ex. Head Digital Marketing in multinational companies)

What is your special USP, and why does this make you irresistable?

What is your target group receiving from you, only from you and from nobody else?

Why is your offering different and more attractive than that of the ten other candidates?

3.Specialisation in solving problems (f. ex. Challenges in transformation in the digital world)

What is your special USP, and why does this make you irresistable?

What is your target group receiving from you, only from you and from nobody else?

Why is your offering different and more attractive than that of the ten other candidates?

4. Social & technical specialisation (f. ex. know how in certain technology in digital marketing)

What is your special USP, and why does this make you irresistable?

What is your target group receiving from you, only from you and from nobody else?

Why is your offering different and more attractive than that of the ten other candidates?

5. Where do I want to go? Goal setting & Prioritisation

What is the position that I am targeting? For example: ‘Head IT’; ‘Private Banker’; ‘M&A Advisor’

Prioritise the directions you want to go: one path you pick for example only ‘Head IT’ positions, and if that does not work out the second priority could be in this case ‘Head Business Analysis’ or ‘IT Project Manager’. I would not recommend to break it down to too many priorities, because you lose the focus then. Try to focus on two to maximum three different positions. You can also work on two different positions at the same time.

Your daily list

Built a list of target companies that you are interested in. This can be a list of five to ten companies. Use an Excel list and write different brackets f. ex. Name, position, status, etc. Under each companies name you write the name of the person who is a decision maker, and could be important to you for ex. Head HR, Head IT, Head Sales, etc.

Research via the internet and social medial the relevant decision maker (for example Head HR, Head IT, Head Department, etc.). Write them down on your list.

For every position you will take one page on your excel list : for example for an ‘Head IT’ position you take one page and for the ‘Head IT Business Analysis’ you will take another page.

NETWORK

Once you have completed your excel list with all the companies and decision makers, you start to build your network.

You start this by contacting the relevant decision maker on your list. They bring you closer to your goal in landing the job. You will begin by sending them a short message on LinkedIn.

Below you see a sequence of messages that you can use to contact the decision makers. If you would like to reach many decision makers and you do not have much time than it is possible to automate the process. In this case you can use a tool called Lead Connect from LinkedIn.

See below a template for a LinkedIn message with one type of sequence:

First Sequence (defensive)

First message (contact request)

Hello John

I was really impressed by your profile and would love to connect.

Best regards

Jakob Barandun

Second message, after the contact request has been accepted.

Hi John

Many thanks for accepting my contact request.

As I see you have a interesting background. You collected valuable experience at company  XY.

How are the projects going? I might be able to provide value to you and your Team.

I would love to have a brief exchange via phone, Skype, Zoom with you.

Would you prefer the morning or afternoon?

Best regards

Jakok

Third message, after there is still no response:

Hello John

I had a look at your profile and have an interesting question to you:

How is your Team staffed at the moment? Do you have enough qualified candidates?

I would love to have a brief exchange via phone, Skype, or Zoom.

Would you prefer the morning or afternoon?

Looking forward to your Feedback.

Best regards

Jakob

Fourth message, after there is no response:

Hello John

I wrote a message to you a couple of days ago but have not received any Feedback.

You are probably quite busy with your projects, which I completely understand.

We could have a brief exchange about your current project. I might be able to support you in some ways and provide value.

Would you prefer the morning or afternoon?

Looking forward to your Feedback.

Best regards

Jakob

Fifth message

Hello John

Did you receive my message

There might be a technical issue with LinkedIn.

Would you like to have a brief exchange via phone this week? Or would you prefer next week ?

Just let me know what suits you better.

Looking forward to your Feedback.

Best regards

Jakob

The problem with most candidates is that they focus too much on themselves. They should instead focus on the decision maker, the person you are contacting. Why should the person care talking to you? Recruiters or Headhunters receive so many CV’s on a daily basis that they have an overkill of profiles that they have to look at. As a result you should try to collect as much information as possible to find a common ground. Make the message personnable and watch for details on the LinkedIn profile.

Then once you have contacted them put all the information and status in the list (Email contact, did not respond, left a message called via phone, etc.) Update this list everyday. This is your guide and keeps you on track.
